Sandgreen and Cally Woods

A circular walk beginning and ending at Gatehouse of Fleet, a Biosphere Community.

On this Walk Galloway with Shirley G Countryside walk of approx. 11 km (7 miles), I will take you on good paths and trails past the Cally Palace Hotel, formerly known as Cally House, and the home of James Murray of Broughton, a grandson of the 5^th Earl of Galloway.

Historic Cally Estate

When completed in 1763 the estate included over 1000 acres (400 Ha.) of parkland, woods and a walled garden which is now home to Cally Gardens nursery.

Route to Sandgreen

We will then proceed past Cally Mains Farm and take a country lane down to the small coastal hamlet of Sandgreen.

Coastal Views and Woodland Trails

You will have the opportunity to admire the views across Fleet Bay before we head back up the country lane and then take a myriad of paths and trails through the oak, birch, beech and sycamore woods to visit The Temple, a gothic folly, and the remains of the old school house for the estate.

After Your Walk

After our walk, why not enjoy lunch at one of Gatehouse’s cafes and pubs, visit The Mill on the Fleet Historic Mill and Visitor Centre in Gatehouse of Fleet or really go for it and treat yourself to Afternoon Tea at the Cally Palace Hotel (24-hr notice required).
